Puppy Training
Before Getting a Puppy
Ask your self and your family few related questions to know whether you are actually prepare to take up this responsibility or you want a pup for some measly fun!
Time Availability
When a young pup comes to a new environment, it misses its littermates, old dwelling place or old master. So as to make this little one comfortable at your place, you need to spend a lot of time with it.
Even after the pup is well acquainted with the house and its family members, it will never be happy if left out alone in the backyard.
So do plan and assign the hours that have to be spent with the puppy by all the family members.
Space Availability
Most of the dogs require a lot of exercise to keep fit and thus need to have enough of space for the same. The small apartment of yours may not cater this need of the pup so decide the breed accordingly.
Spending
If you are under the impression that the cost of the puppy is what you have paid to the breeder at the time of purchase then you are mistaken. The puppy brings with it its expenditure for vaccination, food, veterinary checkups, dog accessories and many unseen expenses that will occur in replacing the damages done by this innocent creature.
Menace and Mess
The unpleasant truth of bringing up a puppy for initial few weeks is that you will have to deal with a lot of untidiness, muddle and chaos. After all, you cannot expect a new born puppy to be toilet trained! The real trouble begins when the pup starts damaging your furniture pieces, and socks etc. And not to overlook the shedding of hair that most of the breeds do.
Once you know the truths and required resources, you are all set to bring a puppy home. But remember, it is always advisable to bring home a puppy more than eight weeks old. An infant puppy demands a lot of care and protection for initial six months. You have to be more of its parents than its master.
Congratulations! A New Born Puppy
A new life is coming home. Equip your self with the medical instruments like puppy scale, ear syringe, bulk of big and small light weight towels etc that you will require at the time of and after whelping.
- Puppy loss is heart breaking. If the new born puppy appears to be life less on rubbing the towel put a drop of brandy over his tongue. Alternatively, place the puppy in a bowl full of cold water and then the hot water. These methods give a shock to the new born and thus make him take the first breath.
- The new born puppy should be encouraged to be nursed right after the birth. The milk produced by the mother in first 24 hours of birth is full of antibodies that protect the puppy from many viruses and bacteria’s, naturally.

- If the little one is bleeding excessively from the umbilical cord, the cord should be tied at the base with the dental floss after swabbing it in iodine.
The first week is the most crucial period in a puppy’s life. So as to assure his good health and long life he should be checked for the symptoms like insufficient weight gain, fail to nurse, continuous crying, vomiting or diarrhoea.
