Teaching Your Dog How To Swim
Although dogs are natural born swimmers, there are some instances where they can get very afraid of the water and swim their way out of the pool. Thus, if you want your dog to be a good swimmer, you have to train him properly so that he will not get terrified first. Once you are able to teach him well, you will be amazed that he will get into the water to take a swim, without your encouragement.
The best way you can start training your dog how to swim is to take him to a lake or pool where you can also enter the water along with your pet. This is so that he will not get terrified. If your dog sees that you are in the water with him, he will get more self confident and would be eager to try swimming on his own. There will also come an instance where he will try to impress you by swimming around you.
The same principle holds true whenever you are trying to teach your dog a new trick. You have to stand beside him so that he will feel that he is comfortable. Once you are not with him, he will feel frightened of trying out new things on his own. Aside from this, it will also strengthen your bond.
If you do not go along with your dog in his training, you are preventing him from being confident. This will make him more terrified of the water and because of this, you are not encouraging him to learn how to swim and be confident to do things on his own.
Once you both are in the water, do not forget to bring along his favorite toy. You can encourage him further by throwing the toy within a short distance so that he can get the idea that you want to play. Swim over to the toy and throw it back to him. This action will make him enjoy swimming with you because he will associate swimming with playing.
You can also bring along another dog who already knows how to swim so that he can help in encouraging your dog to try swimming. When you three are in the pool, you can play fetch together so that your pet will enjoy the training.
There may also be times where a dog will require using a dog swimming life vest so that he can be trained how to swim. These jackets normally have handles in them where you can easily hold onto so that your dog can easily be lifted out of the lake or pool.
After training your dog how to swim, make sure that you rinse him so that whatever bacteria or chemical that may have stuck to his hair are rinsed away. Aside from rinsing him after his swim, you can also give him a rinse beforehand so that the pool water will not be absorbed by his coat hair.
If the above mentioned tips are followed, you can be ensured that your dog will swim in no time.
