Go to your spot” command is very helpful in instances where you need to redirect the dog’s action. Like for example when you have visitors at your place, you definitely do not want your dog to jump all over them and irritate and scare them. In this situation if the dog is trained for “go to you spot” which could be any thing, his bed or mat or room, you get the whole scenario under control.

The “go to” command is also helpful when:

  1. You are eating your meals and do not want your dog to beg around.
  2. When he is barking excessively, this command diverts his attention successfully and helps to make him calm.

Before training your dog for this command, keep a few things in mind:

  1. The dog should never feel this command as a punishment. Thus use it only when required.
  2. Fix his spot like the bed or his crate or anywhere you want him to rest and do not change it again and again. Like if you have introduce him to the command “go to your bed” then do not transform it by saying “go to your crate or mat”. This creates confusion.

Step By Step Training

Step1:

Stand two meters away from the spot. Call your dog. Give him the command “go to your mat”. While doing so, point your finger towards his mat and throw his favourite treat over his mat. He will run to the spot take the treat. Praise him when he does so.

Step2:

Repeat the above action a number of times. Every time you should point towards his mat while giving him the command. Be generous in giving treats and praises.

Step3:

Once the dog has started obeying you, gradually increase your distance from his mat. First command him while you are in the same room, then slowly move on to the other room and then outside the house.

A successful “go to your spot” will make the dog come back to his mat or bed from anywhere.

Step4:

Once the dog has mastered the command, it is the time to reduce the treats, but not praises!

Treat him every third or fourth time he obeys you. Instead of giving him the treat to lure, reward him for his obedience.

Step5:

Practice makes the man perfect! The rule holds good for dogs also. Repeat the above steps number of times in a day and soon you will find you’re self to be a proud master of an obedient dog.
