Dog Training - How to Train A Dog To Come When Called
Teaching the dog to come when called is the basic command that has to be taught to the little puppy as soon as he learns his name. It is one of the very important command that helps you to protect the dog from any kind of dangerous confront by simply calling him to you. You feel the complete hold on the dog when leashed, but the “come” command helps the owner to be the in charge of the scenario even if the dog is unleashed.

A step by step training helps the dog to learn and respond to this command within a span of few days.
Step 1:
The training begins at home. Untrained dog or a puppy should never be unleashed at public or unsecured places. This could be very dangerous for the dog.
When the puppy is not playing, call him name in an excited tone followed by the “come” command and make the movements like stepping back or tapping your knees.
Step 2:
When the dog responds to the command and come to you praise him without any overexcitement and give him a treat of a biscuit or liver bites. Keep in mind; do not show him the treat before giving the command. If the dog is aware of the treat, he will be coming to simply eat that no matter you call or not!
Step 3:
Do not hesitate in investing a heavy amount of treats. The treat makes the task easy for you and interesting for dogs.
Step 4:
If the dog does not come on calling give it a try again without losing patience and the tone of excitement in your voice. You need to convey the dog that coming to you when you call his name is a good thing.
Step 5:
Practice the command for five to six times in a day till the dog becomes habitual to it. Once you start getting the positive response from him, take him out in the yard, unleash him and begin with practicing the command. Make sure the yard is safely fenced before unleashing the dog.
When you are outside, there could be many attractions that will divert your dog’s attention and focus. Do not reinforce the command on him if he is busy chasing a squirrel or having a small conversation with other dogs outside the yard.
Practice the command every day and you will be able to see your dog running to you when called his name followed by the “come” command, in not more than 7 days.
Some basic tips are very helpful at the time of training the dog.
- You should avoid using the “come” command when you are angry and want to punish the dog. Also when you want to give him his pills or a bath or anything that he is reluctant to, do not make use of the command, rather in such situations you walk to him. This will be very helpful in avoiding the disobedience.
- When unleashed, quite possible that the dog will run away from you. Do not run after him as he would associate the whole thing with a new game! Rather you call his name, followed by the “come” command and run away from him.
