A regular cleaning of dog’s ear keeps it tidy and pain free. Clean ear safes the dog from developing many ear diseases and you from paying extra visits and money to the vet. The process should be taken up with along with his baths, at least twice a month. If you notice excessive wax or foul smell coming out of your dog’s ear, it signifies an ear problem. The dog is in a suffering if he is constantly shaking his head or rubbing and scratching his ears against other objects. Excessive matting of hair in the external ear and disorientation are also the signs of ear problems in dogs.

Precaution is always better than cure. So make a reasonable use of your eyes and nose and keep your dog’s ears under a close watch. Investing on pet scope, an instrument similar to the one used by the doctors, helps in keeping a better watch for excessive wax or redness in dog’s ear. Pus like formation with the foul smell in the ear is the sign of bacterial infection that has to be treated by the vet.   

Dog Care Methodologies

1. Always flush the dog’s ear with warm water at slightest hint of odour. A combination of equal parts of rubbing alcohol and vinegar recommended by many vets can be used for cleaning task. If the dog has open sores, this combination may cause a lot of irritation and itching.


2.  Many ear care products that are made to dry and clean up unwanted moisture in the ear canal of the dog may be used for the cleaning purpose.


3.   Extra caution should be taken while inserting a cotton tip swab inside the dog’s ear. This may push the wax or the foreign material deep inside the ear. You may also lose the cotton inside his ear causing a bigger problem.


4. A better way of cleaning is to dip the cotton swab nicely into the cleaning solution and gently massage the dog’s outer ear portion.  You may find your dog shaking his head after the massage. Let me do that as it helps the clear the ear canal.


5. If the excess hair growth inside dog’s ear is keeping you away from taking the proper care, then you will have to pluck the hair grown inside the ear. The process is not at all painful. Apply the ear powder covering the hair nicely. After a while, the hair can get plucked using a tweezers or simply fingers.
