Dog Coat Care
A glowing dog’s coat tells all about his good health and his caring owner! The basic of dog’s grooming begins with his coat and skin care. Every dog’s coat has a natural sebaceous gland located underneath the skin. This gland is responsible for secreting greasy oil that gives the hair body and strength naturally. A number of products having a varied pH levels that enhance the functioning of this gland are available in the market. The coat grooming requirements varies with the nature of dog’s skin and hair.

The basic caring tips that holds good on every dog are:
- The dog should be hair brushed at least once a month. If they enjoy getting brushed, the exercise could be taken daily. This way the natural oil secreted from within the dog’s body fairly reaches till the tip of every hair. Also the regular brushing avoids the hair build up and stimulates the working of sebaceous gland.
Very similar to human hair, dog’s hair also completes the whole life cycle of getting born, growing, getting old and shedding. Different hair type varies in their grooming requirement. The long haired dogs should get their hair brushed every day. This helps a lot in restricting excessive shedding. Such dogs should be taken to their professional groomers at least once in two weeks for a hair cut.
The middle haired dogs shed hair throughout the year and require bathing twice in a month. Their hair brushing exercise should be taken along with their baths!
- Care should be taken while bathing the dog. He should never be scrubbed too hard. This may remove the natural oil from the dog’s skin thus making it prone to humidity, impurities, powders etc.
- The mats, flees and similar parasites do a lot of damage to dog’s coat. A dog should be regularly treated for such ailments. He should be exposed and made comfortable to these cleaning sessions right from his puppy days. Use of hugs, cuddles and praises helps a lot in keeping the dog settled through out the cleaning duration.
- A nutritious and healthy diet plays a lot in maintaining dog’s good health and thus a glowing skin and coat. He should be given an appropriate amount of balanced solid and liquid diet planned by the professional vet. The healthy diet should further be supported by a lot of exercise in order to achieve the desired results.
