Easygoing and generally good natured, the Black and Tan Coonhound is a dog with a lively nature and a very curious streak. This is a dog that loves to explore, and because of this trait he does need to be closely supervised on kept on the leash. This is a working dog, and his instinct will take over whenever there is a scent to be followed. These dogs are good with children and generally with other pets, although they can be dominant with other dogs. Although protective these aren't generally aggressive dogs, and can be affectionate without being too demanding.
