How To Cure Submissive Urination
Submissive urination is a situation where the puppy or sometimes an adult dog urinates unknowingly all over when he becomes overexcited, cowed or aroused. This is any annoying situation faced by the owners of most of the shy and timid puppies. Nevertheless some adult female dogs are also prone to this problem. But submissive urination is not a problem without solution. It can be easily treated!
The dogs whose owners are dominantly strict are quite very prone to the problem of submissive urination. A number of other factors also contribute to this problem. When the dog or the puppy is greeted over affectionately, he tends to urinate out of excitement. In some serious cases, the dog urinates at the mere arrival of the owner or any guest at home. Some dogs get scared out of scolding and loud heated arguments, and tend to urinate. Many times loud unknown sounds like that of a horn or any music may also trigger the problem.
The urination is caused due to any behavioural problem or any other physical abnormality; this could be correctly determined by the vet only.
Once the problem is been identified, next starts the treatment part. Apart from the medicine and training, the most important thing that your dog requires is your love and patience. Remember, canine suffering from submissive urination is bound to be very sensitive and receptive to the way he is being treated.

to help your dog to come out from this trouble, you need to change a number of your habits before modifying his!
- The very moment you see the first glimpse of submissive urination, stop scolding and punishing your dog! As the dog is already responsive, such negative behaviour will make him feel more week and powerless. Rather use the support of commands and a firm though polite “No” to stop him from doing any thing wrong. Keeping patience is must while dealing with such dogs.
- As all of us have heard, laughter is the best medicine. Try it, your laughter can heal your dog’s troubles also. Avoid getting into fights and arguments in front of your timid dog. Talk to him, praise him on the smallest good deed he do and if done any thing wrong, politely encourage him to the right direction.
- When you greet the dog and hover, hug or grab him, the dog feels dominated. The right way to greet you coy canine is simply let him approach you.
If the dog urinates when you greet him on your arrival back home, or when greeted by any outsider, you should down play the greeting part by simply saying him a calm hello. Ignoring the excited dog for initial few minutes by not making even any eye contact with him, till the point he calms down also helps him from getting to the peak of excitement.
- Reducing the intake of water from you canine’s diet is also helpful. But that has to be done under the supervision of a vet so that you do not end up causing the poor dog dehydration.
- If the problem seems to be a little more serious then do discuss it with your vet. There are many medical treatments also available that take care of this problem.
The key to all the dog related problems is the correct training. The training should be initiated at his early puppy days so that you can identify his basic nature of coyness at an early stage thus preventing it from becoming a behavioural problem in later days.
