Not all the time barking is due to some behavioural problem. Dog barks when he wants to communicate something to you. It could be anything like, he could be hungry and wants food or someone may be outside the door or he wants to come in, or he wants you to come out with him. The moment you will understand the call and answer him, he will stop barking.
Many a times, the stray dogs and cats trigger barking. In such a case, just bring your dog away from their sight and involve him in another activity like playing with ball or Frisbee.
Alert Barking
This is the skill you also want your dog to be good at. You should train and encourage your dog to bark when somebody is knocking at the door. But at the same time you have to tame him to stop after three or four barks. For this purpose, you can teach him “enough” command.
To start with the training, you need to create a sound similar to a door knock and then ask your dog to “speak”. Once he is thorough with the “speak” command you can introduce the “enough” command. Practice this command everyday and you will find the situation completely under your control.
