How to Stop Your Dog From Jumping On People
We all love to see and want our cute little puppies jumping over us. This gives such a special feeling of how important we are for them and they love us so much! But the same act evolves as the most annoying behaviour of your grown up dog when he knocks you down on the floor leaving you hurt and embarrassed!
Dog jumping over people is the most common problem faced by the dog owners. It is again a very natural part of the dog’s behaviours and we have to alter it to go well with our handiness.

To understand the behaviour of your dog better, you should know the reason behind his acts. The dog jumps over you because:
- of the excitement! When we see our loved ones after a while, we hug them. And when dogs see their loved ones, they jump on them! Jumping over is their way of showing pleasure and happiness and love for you.
- He may want to seek your attention towards him self. Reason for seeking attention could be any, he might be feeling hungry or may want you to play with him or just want you to attend him by simple patting and talking. Never reward him by giving attention if he jumps on you.
- The dog also jumps when they see any of their favourite treats or toys in your hands. Again, this jumping is out of enjoyment and happiness of getting that treat!
- Though seldom, but a few dogs jump over people, mostly the guests coming at your home to show their dominance over your house.
Now when the reason behind dog’s jumping is clear, you must have understood, jumping dog is not a defaulter! It is his way of showing his love and affection to you. Thus while working on this feature of his natures, keep in mind, never scold him or slap him for doing this. Also, never cuddle him and pat him when he does so! If you want your dog not to jump on the outsiders, you along with all your family members will have convey this clear message to your dog that jumping over people is inappropriate.
Modifying the dog’s behaviour is accordance with our ease is only possible through the right training. The early you begin the training, the easy it becomes for the dog to adapt.
Treating the jumping habit through training is not a rocket science. Following the below mentioned easy step religiously brings remarkable changes in dog’s nature within a span of few days.
- Stay alert! The moment you see your dog is about to jump over you; take a back step so that he misses to jump over you! After doing so do not see and say anything to him. When he becomes little calm you can get back to him. Come down to his eye level, pat him, and praise him. This will help the dog to learn that you come to him when he is not jumping.
- Another affective method that works wonders is; command him to “sit” the moment he is all set to knock you down. This method immediately diverts the dog’s mind and action. And thus helps us to achieve the desired behaviour.
- When dealing with the bigger breeds, it is always good to train them in their puppy days itself. Still if the situation has reached to extremes, the use of pinch collar or prong collar brings the changes. The dog is made to wear this pinch collar with a small leash attached. When ever he jumps the owner is suppose to give a sharp snap downwards over the leash for not more than two seconds. This action will not hurt the dog at the same time teaching him that jumping is something you do not like.
This is an extreme method and should be advisably used under a professional supervision.
