Why your Dog Digs
Many a times we have observed dogs in busy situations digging the ground like no one’s business. They have taken it as their hobby and indeed love it all. It’s been asked why they do it and not other activities but there have been very few people who have showed serious interest. The question of if to stop or not to stop them from digging is the real nut to crack.
Dogs too need pleasurable, joyous, and fun moments in their lives and this is the reason why they dig the ground. Just like human beings, dogs get bored, stressed up and most importantly loneliness engulf them at some points. They yearn to join the rest of the family in the house, follow them to family and friendly gatherings and any other places a person will want to go. But it’s not possible for the dog to reach all these areas and that’s why they get involved in activities to help forget the loneliness and boredom.
You may be surprised when you get home only to see how your precious dog has played with your garden behind the house with brown loamy soil all over the place. But this is something you ought to appreciate and embrace if your want to co-exist with your dog. The funniest thing is that experts have accepted the fact that dog digging is basically very normal as seen from wild animals. But why must they dig the ground when there are other things to do?
- To control temperature: temperatures at times get the extreme where dogs reach out for other ways to regulate body temperatures and therefore they will dig out dens to get them warm especially in winter and remain cool in the summer. To be able to check out dog digging, provide some shades when in hot climates e.g. summer and a warm enclosure when temperatures are extremely cold.
- It’s basically the denning instinct where dogs will want to live in well protected places. They will not resist the temptation to dig if enough shelter is lacking.
- Most dogs have great fun in hunting and therefore use this as a way or part of the hunting technique. Such breeds are the terriers that are well crafted to act dig the ground with vigor. Do not forget that there exist fresh and live organisms in the ground hence dogs will dig to find out this hidden food.
- Dogs dearly care about themselves and when they dig its one important sign to indicate they care and occasionally they will be seen hiding/ or stashing food in the holes they have dug.
- Human beings are explorers so are the dogs, they always want to know what exists beneath the surface. Any precious or dangerous items hidden in the ground are dug out by dogs.
- What people are other animals do normally are imitated by the dogs. When you dig up the ground for example to plant a tree, a dog will imitate and scratch the ground.
Indeed, there are so many reasons as to why dogs dig the ground but these are believed to be the first on the chart. Next time you wonder about it, just read these points.
