The Dog Whisperer is a television show aired on the National Geographic channel. It is based on dog mentality and has received an Emmy award nomination for its great impact in restoring to mental health and creating solid balance among problematic dogs. The reality TV show is hosted by the now celebrated Cesar Millan. He has made great strides in advocating for pack leadership especially the aggressive type of dogs. By his use of limits, rules and tough dog guidelines together with certain deliberate restrictions, the Dog Whisperer expert strongly believes that a serene environment needs to be set up to safely and efficiently work with the belligerent dogs.

Rottwailers, German shepherds and pit bulls among many more than 50 dogs are shown on the reality TV show has being owned by Cesar. All of them are shown to live in magical harmony with each other without the common belligerence that exists among the different dog breeds. In fact the dogs are left unleashed and unattended all the time and yet none of the common dog fiasco is witnessed apart from the normal day to day dog wrangles that meet with quick and efficient solution. Cesar is quite the expert to be included honorary as a member of IACP which is an abbreviation for the International Association of Canine Professionals.

The program from the outset brings the aggressive dog to the scene together with the owner who then extends the program by highlighting to Cesar what her woes with the dog are. With a few studious discourses, the host then engages the dog in a few park leadership courses to which to the surprise of many the less aggressive do respond positively. The very aggressive and difficult cases are usually taken to his dog center where the ‘magic’ will be done sometimes for more than a week or even months on end. His common adage and philosophy in dealing with such straying dogs is exercise, discipline and lastly affection.

Dog Whisperer and its host have also received enormous popularity.  From TV icons and show hosts. From Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart, Jay Leno to Diane Sawyer as hosts and CNN, Arts Emmy, Nightlife to Today Show as channels Cesar is well known and incredibly popular.

But Cesar and his show have not managed to escape the barrage of criticism about his dog handling methods. Some of the well known University animal behavioral scholars have termed his actions and endeavors as inhumane and archaic at best. They insist that you cannot force and at times beat to utter submission a dog so as to make it fit into a mould you have created for him or her. They further attest to the fact that Cesar has dragged backwards the advances the animal behavioral fraternity had made to curb erring dogs.  But with all this, Dog Whisperer is still keeping it going. Most of the shows fans have on the other hand defended him saying that his success rate speaks for itself. With the ratings up it is easy to see why the show is here to stay.
